I'm Home! ? Fostering Family Bonds and a Sense of Home

?Mommy, I?m home!? two-year-old Ethan hollered. He had just been to Sunday School and was returning to the class room where is own mother was the teacher. Considering where Ethan had just been, where he was and where he was going, perhaps those words are more profound than we realize.

Home is Where the Family Is

We all long to be home, and even Ethan knows that home is where Mommy ? or family ? is. In this modern age, families can feel at home even if they are not physically together. A college student feels at home when they receive a care package. Grandparents feel at home when they get homemade cards from the grandchildren. Children feel at home when they are connected in some way to their parents, and parents feel at home when all the little chickens are safely in the coop.

Some things to do to foster family bonds:

? Maintain photo albums to teach children about extended family
? Keep a family journal to be read out loud occasionally, reminding ourselves what fun we have as a family
? Keep a family history and pass down our heritage, complete with stories of our ancestors
? Keep family prominently displayed in our home
? Write and telephone extended family regularly

Home is Where God Is

Ethan had just been to Sunday School, and recognized that he was Home. He is being taught about his Heavenly Father and Jesus, and that if he lives a certain way, he can return Home to live with them. What can we do now, as adults, to progress on our journey Home? The same thing that we teach our children: Scripture reading, prayer, and living according to God?s commandments. Choose good friends and treat others kindly.

Some things to do to improve our journey home:

? Pray on a regular basis
? Read scriptures daily; better yet ? FEAST upon the word by studying it
? Do a good deed daily ? or more
? Learn and keep God?s commandments
? Love one another

Home is Where We Feel Safe

Ethan felt at home at church because he felt safe there. Just like the wise man who built his house upon a rock, we feel safest when we are within sturdy dwellings. We feel safe when we are prepared for life to happen. We feel safe when we have back up plans.
We also feel safe on a different level when we are with those we love and who love us. Ethan knew he was surrounded and protected by people he loved and could trust. Like him, we want to be with family when we are in danger, but we also call upon the Lord at those times. As the saying goes ? there are no atheists in foxholes!! His presence makes us feel safe and secure wherever we are and whoever we are with.

Some things to do to feel safe:

? Plan ahead and be prepared
? Have emergency plans for fire and tornado, and practice those plans regularly
? Have a list of contacts phone numbers in a convenient place
? Have emergency supplies stocked up and easily accessible
? Establish and/or maintain a relationship with God (see previous list)

We Must Actively Teach our Children To Feel Safe

Children do not automatically feel safe. How can they unless they experience it first? That occurs when they are infants, swaddled and cuddled. As they grow, there are specific things we can do to help our children feel as safe as Ethan.

? Teach them that Heavenly Father loves them.
? Teach them the names of all the people in their lives that love them
? Teach them how to always get in touch with you, provide them access, and RESPOND IMMEDIATELY, regardless of where you are or who you are with
? Teach them how to get in touch with all the other people that love them
? Teach them the family safety plans

Are We Doing All We Can to Go Home?

Ethan is doing all he can to return home ? to his mother at church and to his Heavenly home ? by trusting his parents. We must trust our Heavenly Father in the same, childlike way. If we do that, we will feel safety here, and safety there!

Sheriff?s deputy wrestles alligator away from middle school

A Florida sheriff's deputy took matters into her own hands last week when a seven-foot alligator was spotted trying to break through the fence of a local middle school.

Jessica McGregor, a 29-year-old Lake County sheriff's deputy and mother of two, responded to the call, fashioned a noose from a 30-foot rope and "lassoed the would-be intruder," the Orlando Sentinel reports.

"I got him turned around, and he started to spin and flop and jump," McGregor told the paper. "Once he got tired, he just laid there and wiggled his tail. I threw the rope over him and dropped down with my knees behind his front legs. He jerked around a little bit and just gave up."

The deputy, who said she and her brother used to catch alligators for fun, explained that she didn't want to wait the estimated two hours for the professional trapper to arrive.

"I've lived in Lake County my whole life," McGregor told the paper. "Back in the day, you had these things come up on your land, and you just caught 'em up and threw 'em back in the nearest watering hole."

No big deal.

While alligator encounters are common in the state, attacks are less so and even then are rarely fatal. Still, they can be scary. Last summer, two Florida teenagers were attacked by alligators in a five-day span. One of them lost the bottom half of his right arm in the nearly fatal encounter.

Facebook Messenger iOS app enables free calling feature for UK users

While Americans and Canadians have enjoyed making app-based voice calls to their Facebook contacts since January, their overseas buddies have missed out -- until now. The social network's iOS Messenger app has just doled out the calling feature to the UK and potentially other parts of Europe too, although we haven't yet been able to confirm exactly how far and wide the update reaches. It's worth noting that the feature isn't enabled on the Android iteration yet, either. The new calling service isn't powered by Skype this time, although it works in a similarly uncomplicated way, with the ability to leave voice messages with any busy users. According to Pocket-lint, this is an experimental version, warning that you might experience a few bugs and glitches as you play around with it, but hey, you're getting free calls to (most of) your friends, barring any data charges. We've tested the new feature and it's working for several of our UK editors over both WiFi and 3G, but if you haven't already picked up the messaging app yet, you can grab it at the source below.

Albanian prisoner seizes hostages in third Greek escape bid

ATHENS (Reuters) - An Albanian murderer who has already used a helicopter to stage two prison breaks has seized hostages in a Greek jail and threatened to blow himself up with them if he is not allowed to escape, police said on Sunday.

Alket Rijai, who is also a convicted robber, barricaded himself into part of the Malandrino jail in central Greece with around five guards late on Saturday, a source in the force told Reuters.

"He is holding a knife and claims to have hand grenades and 200 grams of C4 explosive on him," the police official said.

Officers had surrounded the jail and negotiations had been going on for more than 12 hours, the official said.

At least two other prisoners were with Rijai, but it was not clear if they were hostages or accomplices, the official added.

Rijai has already embarrassed the authorities with two headline-grabbing prison breaks in 2006 and 2009 - using a helicopter in both escapes.

In 2009, a helicopter flew over a high-security prison in Athens, lowered a ladder and whisked him and an accomplice off the roof as guards looked on. The helicopter pilot later said he had been hijacked.

Rijai was arrested a few months after his second escape while sleeping in a hideout in a village northeast of the Greek capital.

Ubuntu Raring Ringtail hits beta, flagship desktop and server flavors left out

Canonical's taken the next step in pushing Raring Ringtail out of its nest by releasing the very first beta version, but only for Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu Cloud, Ubuntu Studio and Xubuntu. Plain ol' Ubuntu for desktops and servers will arrive with the final 13.04 beta release on March 28th, so that devs will be able to focus on the software and keep things under wraps for a little longer. These early versions aren't for the faint of heart, but adventurous folks can download them at the source if they don't mind some kinks. However, those who aren't interested in tempting fate can wait for the polished release in April.

Why Wait For Google Fiber? UK Farmers Want Faster Internet, Build ...

Last November, neighborhoods in Kansas City became the first to enjoy the 1Gbps Internet speed made possible through Google Fiber. The service is not only the fastest ISP in the US, it is also?prompting Time Warner to increase speeds and lower rates in the area, ushering startups into the area,?and making a bunch of Kansas City users who opted into the service incredibly happy. As Google considers the possibility of bringing Fiber to other communities (some signs points to Canada as a possible spot), a group of remote farmers in the UK with sluggish Internet speeds decided they didn?t want to wait on their ISPs, the government, or even Google to deliver an upgrade to their broadband speeds.

They opted to build an ultrafast fiberoptic network themselves.

Located in rural Lanchashire in the northern part of England, the local landowners began working together to spur interest in bringing fast Internet to their rural community.?As reported by the BBC, they hammered out a business plan as a ?not for profit? community benefit society and began selling shares into?Broadband for the Rural North (B4RN). To get the network built, locals invested their time and physical labor to dig trenches and lay fiber cables while raising half a million pounds.?After installing the network on the property, which is estimated to be around $1,500 (much less than what ISPs would charge), the cost of the service to residents is only $45 a month and delivers Internet speeds that are?about 75 times faster than the average in the UK.

To further raise awareness of their efforts, B4RN has hosted a few open houses showing off super fast downloads (917 Mbps) and movie streaming to the media, business owners, and locals who are still on the fence.?The plan is to continue to raise another 1.3 million pounds in order to roll out services to surrounding villages over the next seven years with the target of connecting 15,000 properties to the network.

Though it may seem like a luxury to have such fast speed, the chief executive of B4RN, Barry Forde, explained to the BBC that farmers are increasingly required to fill out forms online, adding??If you haven?t got broadband you are severely disadvantaged.?

Smaller communities are often overlooked by corporate telecommunication companies because the cost of installing the system is too great for the number of customers who will ultimately use the service. Although big cities will inevitably see fiber come within the next decade, communities on the fringes will likely be stuck with 20th century broadband speeds for a long time.

Building the network themselves also means that they retain control over their land even as they increase its value by embracing the latest technology. Also, landowners can dig a fiber line on their property without having to sacrifice its aesthetics, something that would be more likely to happen with a corporation focused on cost alone.

Similar cooperatively owned fiberoptic ISPs were started in 2002 in North Dakota. The Dakota Central Telecommunications and Dickey Rural Networks completed their networks last year. Together, the two networks span over 10,000 square miles and service about 16,000 residents and businesses.

These efforts are being hailed as role models for other communities around the world calling for more digital services, such as Netflix and live TV streams, telecommunication services like Skype and Google Hangouts, online gaming and cloud computing. As more people transition to professional and personal lives played out in the digital realm, the demand for fast and reliable service will be paramount, especially in rural areas that have few options for gaining access to faster speeds.?Undoubtedly, large telecommunication companies will be watching B4RN and other community networks very closely to see whether co-ops may be the next big threat undermining their customer base.

Looking ahead, rural fiber networks may become the great equalizer that slows down urban aggregation contributing to?the rise of mega-cities. After all, many are driven into the cities in order to find work and have access to more ?modern? services like broadband and mobile networks. But the nature of work is changing as?a growing number of people are telecommuting or working virtually. Those communities looking to halt or even reverse this flight may turn to building their own fiber networks to eliminate the technological handicaps that they are often associated with.

So the next time you read where someone has labeled people in the country as being ?behind the times,? just remember: they may be reading that same comment as they surf the web, download massive files, and stream their favorite shows without a hiccup.

Republican Senator Rob Portman has announced his support for same-sex marriage, saying he reversed his position on the divisive social issue after his son came out as gay.

?I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government?shouldn't?deny them the opportunity to get married,? Portman wrote in an op-ed published Friday in the Columbus Dispatch.

?That isn?t how I?ve always felt. As a congressman, and more recently as a senator, I opposed marriage for same-sex couples. Then something happened that led me to think through my position in a much deeper way," Portman wrote in the op-ed.

The decision came after long consideration, the Ohio lawmaker told newspapers from his home state on Thursday. Portman?s 21-year-old son Will, who is a junior at Yale University, discussed his sexual orientation with Portman and his wife in 2011, the senator said.

His son said that his sexuality was ?not a choice, it was who he is and that he had been that way since he could remember,? Portman told Cleveland.com during an interview in his Washington, D.C. office.

?It allowed me to think of this from a new perspective, and that?s of a dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have ? to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,? Portman told reporters during that interview.

Portman?s changed stance comes amid spreading support for same-sex marriage. Forty-eight percent of Americans supported same-sex marriage in 2012, up from 35 percent a decade ago, according to a Pew Research Center analysis from Dec. 2012.

Arguments challenging the Defense of Marriage Act, which Portman voted for in 1996, are due to be heard before the Supreme Court later this month.

Portman was considered a potential vice presidential candidate to run with Mitt Romney in the last presidential election, and acted as a surrogate for the Romney campaign in the important swing state of Ohio.

Prominent Ohio conservative Senator Rob Portman, once considered for Mitt Romney's running mate, is speaking out about gay marriage in support of his son, who is gay, just as Romney gets set to give his first public speech since the election today. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Portman told Romney that his son was gay, the senator said in an interview with CNN??that aired Friday.

?I told Mitt Romney everything,? Portman said of the vetting he underwent last year. ?That process is, intrusive would be one way to put it. But, no, yeah, I told him everything.?

Mitt Romney adviser Beth Myers, who led the vice presidential vetting process, confirmed to NBC News Friday morning that that the campaign was aware Sen. Rob Portman's son was gay as they vetted him for the number 2 job ? but that the situation played "no role whatsoever" in Romney's decision about who to pick as his running mate.

"It did not play a role," she said. Myers said that Portman told the campaign about the fact that his son was gay.

Myers said Portman called her on Thursday evening to tell her about his decision to switch his position and come out in support of gay marriage.

In the interview with Cleveland.com, Portman said that he believes the issue of same-sex marriage is ?more generational than it is partisan.? He said that former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is a lesbian, told him to ?do the right thing, follow your heart.?

Portman said he also considered his Christian faith, which led him to decide that ?in a way, this strengthens the institution of marriage.?

?The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly from the Golden Rule, and that fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue,? Portman said, according to Cleveland.com.

?Especially proud of my dad today,? Will Portman tweeted on Friday with a link to the Columbus Dispatch op-ed.

The announcement came the same day as fellow Republican Senator Marco Rubio reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage at a conservative gathering.

?Just because I believe that states should have the right to define marriage in a traditional way does not make me a bigot,? Rubio told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday.

Samsung partners with Mobeam to offer scannable bar codes on the Galaxy S 4

For over a year, mobile commerce startup Mobeam has been looking for OEM suitors willing to embed its bar code scanning tech into phones -- and it's found an ideal partner in Samsung. The tech, which Mobeam calls light based communications (LBC), will be embedded in the manufacturer's latest flagship, the Galaxy S 4. LBC makes it possible for point-of-sale scanners to pick up digital 1D bar codes. So how does it work? Mobeam takes advantage of the phone's proximity sensor to beam pulses of light which mimic your standard black-and-white code. The option should be available for any third-party developer that wants to use it, but unfortunately the tech is only launching -- for now, at least -- on the GS 4, though we've been told that it will eventually be ready to go for more devices down the road. Later today, Americans will finally get to meet the cater-waiter who recored and then leaked the video revealing Mitt Romney's now infamous "47 percent" comments.

The man, whose identity is being withheld until he?appears?on MSNBC's "The Ed Show" on Wednesday night, was?a bartender who was working at the Romney fundraiser?in May 2012.

And in another twist of the political knife, he says he was?inspired?to tape the event because Bill Clinton was super nice to him once.

The bartender told?The?Huffington Post?that?he had previously worked a similar event at a private home?where the former president was speaking. After his speech, Clinton took the time to share his legendary personal charm with all people working the event. He went?into the kitchen to thank the staff for all their hard work, and even stuck around to sign autographs and take photos. The bartender says he brought his camera to the Romney event expecting the same level of hospitality. (Romney showed up late and left early, failing to gladhand with the little people.)

The bartender says Romney never told the staff that the meeting was off the record, though if they were in the room they probably heard it. (And we don't know what his employer's rules were about confidentiality.) He also claims he wasn't planning to release the tape ... until he heard Romney say that Obama's voters are the 47 percent of Americans?"who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it." That was what led him to post clips online and eventually?turn the whole tape over?to?Mother Jones?reporter David Corn.

"I felt it was a civic duty. I couldn't sleep after I watched it," he said. "I felt like I had a duty to expose it." ?

The bartender's face and name will be revealed tonight when MSNBC?airs a taped interview with him and host Ed Schultz. "The Ed Show" airs at 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. Eastern time.
